To Catch a Thief

(Kirsten Williams)
To Catch a Thief © 2004

A wicked feeling bizarre and strange
Can’t quite put my finger on what’s changed
I’m over at your house; you’re in a somber mood
I follow you around padding from room to room

But something is missing like a thief passed through
Seems like something’s been taken from you
Oh to catch a thief, Oh to catch a thief

No overturned boxes, no emptied drawers
No broken glass shards by the kitchen door
Flowers on the table top bloom still and undisturbed
The cat lulls herself to sleep with steady heavy purrs

But something is missing like a thief passed through
Seems like something’s been taken from you
Oh to catch a thief, Oh to catch a thief

I know you don’t figure that you were robbed
But I have a hunch it was an inside job
I’d bet my life, it was an inside job

Oh to catch a thief/ Oh to catch a thief

I dust the doorknobs for fingerprints
Searching for cold hard evidence
That something was taken when a thief passed through
That somebody stole something precious from you
And now from me too
